Q1 2025 Vonage Developer Recap

Published on May 6, 2025

As we roll into the second quarter of 2025, we're back with another roundup of what’s new and exciting for developers building with Vonage. From SDK releases to video upgrades and authentication improvements, here’s what we’ve been up to in the first quarter of the year!

Developer Tools & SDK Enhancements

Vonage CLI Gets a Major Update

We launched a fresh new version of the Vonage CLI with a smoother experience, cleaner commands, and even better support for Vonage APIs. Whether you’re spinning up a new project or managing existing services, the CLI now makes it faster and easier to get things done from your terminal.

New Client Libraries for Mobile Platforms

We’ve released a brand-new Client Library for Android and iOS. This SDK is a total rewrite and replaces the older Verify Silent Auth and Number Verification SDKs. The big win? You can now send specific API calls only over mobile data. No more toggling off WiFi or asking users to do it manually.

Why does this matter? Some APIs, like Number Verification and Silent Authentication, depend on mobile network traffic to work correctly. Our new library takes care of that routing for you. Just drop in a few lines of code, and your requests will automatically go through the cellular network when needed. Easy as that.

Advancements in Video Technology

VP9 SVC Codec in Public Beta

We’re testing out VP9 with Scalable Video Coding (SVC) in public beta. This means sharper, more efficient video streaming, even on lower bandwidth connections. It’s a step toward smoother, more reliable experiences across all devices.

VP9, developed by Google, offers better video quality at lower bitrates than VP8, making it ideal for bandwidth-limited environments. Its SVC feature enables a single video stream to include multiple layers of resolution and framerate, allowing the stream to adapt to changing network conditions and device capabilities with improved resiliency.

New Client SDK for Vonage Video API (v2.29)

Version 2.29 of our Video API SDK is now live. Expect better performance, stronger error handling, and expanded platform support for real-time video. If you’re building video apps, this update’s for you.

Security & Identity

TOTP Two-Factor Authentication Is Here

We’ve added support for Time-based One-Time Passwords (TOTP), giving you a reliable and easy way to add two-factor authentication to your apps. No extra hardware needed, just a simple, secure implementation.

TOTP is a two-factor authentication method that uses a time-based code from an app like Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, or Ente Auth on your phone. You'll enter this code along with your password for added security.

API Improvements

Number Insight API Attribute Cleanup

We’re deprecating a few redundant attributes in the Number Insight Advanced API. This cleanup helps streamline responses and boosts overall efficiency. If you're using this API, be sure to check the docs for updates.

Stay in the Loop

That’s a wrap for now, but we’re just getting started. More updates are on the way, so stay tuned! In the meantime, we’d love to hear from you. Get in touch with us in the Vonage Community Slack or on VonageDev on X.
