Number Verification API to be Replaced by Verify with Silent Authentication

Published on July 31, 2025

Time to read: 1 minute

To reduce complexity and make adoption easier, Vonage is consolidating its silent authentication solutions. The Number Verification API will sunset on September 30, 2025. All customers are encouraged to migrate to the Vonage Verify API with the Silent Authentication workflow.

This change offers:

  • A single, unified API

  • Comprehensive silent authentication coverage

  • Invisible, user-friendly authentication flows

  • Enhanced fraud protection against phishing, artificially inflated traffic, and more.

Why the Change?

Since launching the Number Verification API at Mobile World Congress 2024, Vonage has continued to innovate in mobile user authentication. Developers and businesses are under growing pressure to provide secure, seamless experiences for users, all while tackling increasingly sophisticated threats, such as phishing and SMS traffic pumping, which are challenges that traditional OTP methods often fail to address.

To address these challenges, we're consolidating our efforts into a single, more reliable solution: the Verify API with Silent Authentication. Unlike the original Number Verification API, Verify offers built-in fallback to SMS, RCS, WhatsApp, email or voice-based OTP if silent authentication isn’t possible, designed to work securely and reliably under real-world conditions.

What We Learned

Through working closely with mobile operators and the developer community, Vonage learned that the top priority isn’t necessarily which technical standard is used; it’s about having a straightforward and effective way to authenticate mobile users from anywhere in the world.

Next Steps and Migration Guide

If you’re using the Number Verification API or evaluating options for silent mobile authentication, now is the time to migrate to Verify API with Silent Authentication. You’ll benefit from a simpler build process, stronger security, and access to new features as they roll out.

To support you through this transition, we’ve prepared a detailed migration guide that walks you through every step to make the process as smooth as possible.
