How to Use PHP Environment Variables in Laravel
Environment variables are essential in Laravel for managing configuration settings across different environments (local, staging, and production). Laravel stores these settings in a .env
file, keeping sensitive data out of version control. This ensures flexibility and security when deploying applications.
In this guide, we'll show you how to configure and use environment variables in a development environment in this case, because production and staging environments have .env
files that should be managed with a managed hosting platform such as Platform.sh, Laravel Forge, or Laravel Cloud.

Meet Diana Pham, A Developer Advocate at Vonage
With high spirits and a low sense of mortality, Diana completed her masters in CS regardless of never having coded prior to grad school. Through her passion for learning and teaching tech, she found her calling in advocacy, where she exercises her creativity through conference talks and content creation. Diana is also an Appwrite Hero and Digital Ocean Wavemaker. Outside of work, she runs a local meetup group called Denver Food and Tech and competes in beauty pageants, where she proudly represents first-generation Vietnamese-Americans and women in tech. She enjoys snowboarding, making foodie and lifestyle content, and eating oysters.
